Day 2: Cycling - Onomichi to Ikuchi Island

Distance: Approximately 35 km / 22 miles

Route Highlights:

Today begins your island-hopping adventure along the world-renowned Shimanami Kaido. After collecting your rental bicycle from the Onomichi  Base, you'll take a short ferry ride (approximately 7 minutes, 110 yen) to Mukaishima Island, bypassing the narrow and busy first bridge.
Your luggage will be collected at the Onomichi base to be delivered to your hotel for this day.

From Mukaishima, follow the well-marked blue cycling line as you ride across modern suspension bridges with dedicated cycling lanes. The route takes you through:

The Yumeshima Kaido connects several smaller islands, offering a more intimate, off-the-beaten-path cycling experience. These islands are less touristed than the main Shimanami Kaido route, providing authentic glimpses of island life in the Seto Inland Sea.

The cycling terrain varies from coastal flats to some rolling hills, with stunning seascapes throughout. You'll return to Ikuchijima by evening to enjoy another night on this charming island.
