Cycle the full Shimanami Kaido on this 5-day self-guided cycling tour through one of Japan's most iconic landscapes. The route connects Onomichi in Hiroshima Prefecture to Imabari in Ehime Prefecture, island-hopping across the Seto Inland Sea via stunning bridges, causeways, and dedicated cycling paths — roughly 120 km / 75 miles of cycling spread over three active days.
This Onomichi to Imabari journey follows the world-famous Shimanami Kaidō cycling route across six islands. You will spend two nights mid-route on Ikuchijima Island, making this a true island-hopping cycling adventure in the heart of the Seto Inland Sea. The well-marked blue cycling line guides you throughout, so no navigation experience is needed.
Three hand-picked stays are included: a hotel in Onomichi on arrival, two nights at a traditional ryokan on Ikuchijima Island for an authentic taste of Japanese inn culture, and an international hotel in Imabari on your final cycling day. Each property is selected for its location and character along the route.
Breakfasts are included at each accommodation from Day 2 onward. Lunch and dinner are left free for your own exploration — a great opportunity to discover fresh local seafood and Seto Inland Sea cuisine at your own pace.
Daily cycling distances are designed for recreational cyclists — 35 km, 45 km, and 40 km, respectively. This self-guided bicycle tour of Japan's Shimanami Kaido is suitable for anyone comfortable on a bike and looking for a rewarding multi-day adventure without the pressure of a guided group.
This Japan cycling tour package includes bicycle rental with a helmet, luggage transfer between hotels, detailed route notes, and all accommodation. Simply arrive in Onomichi, and we'll take care of the rest.
Whether you are an experienced cyclist or a first-time touring rider, the Shimanami Kaido 5-day cycling tour offers an unforgettable way to experience island Japan at your own speed.
